The fuss about Whole Foods [02 Jun 2008|10:16pm]
Last week I walked into Whole Foods for the first time just to get a few little things -- some fruits. It looked nice, smelled great so I thought I'd stop by there today to pick up ingredients for dinner. The presentation of the store is wonderful and the promise of all the "organic" and "healthy" (or whatever) products sounds appealing. We even did a case study on the store in b-school on how much they empower their employees. Well, the best lettuce I could find was already tired and the peppers were not exciting, not for what I was paying. The fish is marinading right now so we'll see how that turns out, but it better be good at 3 times the price of QFC. QFC is not the low price player in town either. And I had to go to there anyway because there were no snow peas at Whole Foods -- yes I asked. I can't get over how a place named Whole Foods has a produce section almost as weak as Wal Mart's.

Tonight's menu:
Roasted Pepper & Snow Pea Salad
and
Grilled Swordfish Steaks w/ Lemon & Thyme

Just rediscovered DJ Shadow. And got back in touch with JT after a few years, but it seems like forever. So very nice to make the link again. The new place is coming along. Hopefully I will have enough time over the holidays to finish the move if I am diligent. With this new place I am finally taking the time to make something nice out of it. No longer will it feel like an oversized college dorm crammed with random belongings collected over time. This time there will be thought, and style. Happy holidays to all of you.

Moving [20 Nov 2007|12:44am]

I am moving from my downtown shag shack to a nice new place in the International District. Let's just hope that there arent too many "international men" (a la Nick's) around. Story at 11.

I quite literally ride the short bus to work every day. Someday I hope to be the driver.

Free ticket to play; Who wants to come with? [03 Feb 2007|08:32am]
I have an extra ticket to "The Equation" at Balagan Theatre for this Saturday at 7:30 or Sunday at 2:00. Contact me if you want to see this and hang out.

Originally commissioned by the UNITAS Theatre Co. of Los Angeles who felt the play’s themes were too controversial for a new company, the workshop was produced nevertheless by the cast and crew and since revised by its author. Told through reverse chronology in Depression-era New York City, with layered scenes in a nearby town house one generation later, THE EQUATION engages the audience in a “how-done-it” about a birth rather than a death. This period “play of excavation” reveals a physician and his wife who attempt to adopt the infant son of a Russian woman desperate to give her child a shot at the American Dream glittering impossibly beyond her grasp. Has this dream devolved into the pursuit of conspicuous wealth, and at what cost?

The cold weather here should go back to Rochester from whence it came.

New Year's Eve [06 Jan 2007|10:07pm]

New Year's Eve, available on Flickr.

A somewhat recent New Year's Eve tradition has been to prepare an exquisite meal. I traded in the night out partying for a more intimate evening with Emily, yet plenty of fine drinks were still had. Taste, presentation, and style were all present in large quantities. And though I don't have four waiting on us at home, the overall experience is similar to that found at El Gaucho. We had peppercorn steak flambe in red wine and cognac sauce topped with shallot. On the side was garlic mashed potato, made from scratch, and sauteed spinach with nutmeg. Though Emily is a vegitarian, that didn't stop her from enjoying the entree. Her version was soy meat, but prepared the exact same way as the steak. The result was very impressive. As someone who dislikes faux meat, I truly enjoyed a sample of her dish. Accompanying the meal was a potent, yet flavorful, cabernet sauvignon. The (almost empty) Hennessy XO was enjoyed before the meal. Finally to usher in the new year, the Champagne of choice was Veuve Cliquot Ponsardin.

I just tried to update the visual style for this journal and ended up quite disappointed. The freebie choices are a bit poor.

Nethack on scorn [27 Jul 2006|03:46am]
For anyone who is still a nethack fiend...
I *finally* got it running on scorn. I got to port over our solaris hacks into bsd hacks and then added a few extra goodies to the game. Binge code is enabled, but the script is not set to run binge mode because I cant remember how to setup a dm and I don't think the stability issues corrected itself. I also noticed that squid got over 100 million points by most likely farming riders or something. Grats on wasting so much of your life on a rediculously repetitive task for several days. ;) I hope you used a script.

I've been working on getting AO to run under Linux with Cedega (the program formally known as WineX) on and off since January. Today, I made history by taking a tour of the different areas you can visit. At this point, I can say that the game is playable depending on your hardware and graphical glitches are reasonable. Indoor areas are PERFECT! In terms of functionality, once you get in the game, its 100%! This was a great challenge involving lots of analyzing huge log files, dissecting Microsoft APIs, disassembly, reverse engineering, and black magic. Thanks to Pete H for answering my noob questions about Wine on irc.

No Daleks in Doctor Who's return [02 Jul 2004|01:50pm]
Mr Hancock accused the BBC of lying about the reasons a deal had not been made.

He said the BBC had tried to commission a cartoon series about gay Daleks for BBC Three.

Cool. I got mentioned in Transgaming's February report for contributing code to the WineX project. Soon I'm going to get CSH slashdotted with the release of Nethack Binge software.
